Picking A Student At Random

While the majority of the time I use ExamView for tests, study guides, and worksheets, I also use it for other things. It's a great way to ranomly choose a student. It keeps them on their toes when you are asking questions and there's something about seeing your name flashed up on the screen.

It can be used for picking random numbers while studying probability, simulating dice rolls or lottery picks. I'd like to hear what others are using it for.

Replace my students with yours and put the correct number of students in the rand command and you are ready to go.

I know its been awhile since first post, but I am a new user of ExamView. I can't make it so the students are randomly picked. I typed them in, but when I highlight the student the recalculate value button doesn't highlight. Can you give me more direction? Thanks

To edit this dynamic question, start by opening the question edit window (to do this, double-click the question). From here, you should be able to just click the Recalculate tool (blue calculator icon) to see the current student name randomly change.

Now follow these steps to modify the question:
1. Go to the Edit menu and select Edit > Algorithm Definitions (you do not need to have anything selected beforehand).
2. You should see two lines in the algorithm dialog. Double-click the first line (variable=which) and change the number in the definition to match the number of students you will have in your list (current value is 7). Click OK.
3. Double-click the second line (variable=student) and replace the names in the definition list with your student names. Click OK.
4. Click Done.

That's all there is to it. You should now be able to click the Recalculate icon repeatedly and see the name change randomly using the list you provided above. You can preview these changes either in the question edit window or Record the changes and view it from the test itself.

Since this is such a nice example of using the dynamic capabilities of ExamView in a clever way, I thought I'd make the file available for our Mac users. I've re-saved the original Windows test file to the new ExamView 6 cross-platform format. You must have a version of EV6 to read this file.

I had thought of writing a small program to accomplish just this task (and I still might) but you have a pretty good idea here.
